"There's no off-season anymore"

Nolan Ryan

Why Don’t Some Employees Perform?

There are many factors that may affect an employee's performance such as:

  • Lack of training or education
  • Unclear expectations
  • Personal/medical problems
  • No incentives
  • Burn-out
  • Overload
  • Right person/wrong job
  • Lack of motivation
  • Poor leadership
  • Disgruntled
  • Outside pressures

Supervisors should be aware they may need to make a multi-dimensional response when they have an employee who is not performing. As an example, in addition to developing a thoughtful and well-articulated EPPRR, supervisors also may need to provide training to the employee, make reasonable accommodations, and/or refer the employee to the Employee Assistance Program for help with personal problems, institute a PIP to improve performance, or take corresponding disciplinary actions for misconduct.
