Integrity
/ Honesty
Definition:
Instills mutual trust and confidence.
Creates a culture that fosters high standards of ethics. Behaves in a fair and ethical manner toward others and demonstrates a sense
of corporate responsibility and commitment to public service.
Ideas for Developing this Competency:
- At a staff meeting analyze what your
organization is doing and discuss other opportunities to ensure
and maintain a reputation of honesty and integrity on the part
of BLM employees in their relationships with one another and in
upholding the public trust.
- Implement in your daily thinking and
behavior Steven Covey's concept of the "emotional bank account."
(This is a metaphor Covey uses to describe the amount of trust
built up in a relationship. It is the feeling of safeness you
have with another human being. If you make deposits into an
emotional bank account with another person through courtesy,
kindness, honesty, and keeping your commitments, you build up a
reserve. The trust level becomes higher as you make more
deposits.)
- Conduct a survey with family members,
peers, and fellow employees to learn what trust means to them,
what makes them lose trust in others, and how they regain trust
when it has been jeopardized or lost.
- Question your work decisions.
Determine if they reflect your values and the values of the
organization.
- When in conflict, explore
alternatives.
- Read Ethics for Bureaucrats by
John Rohr or Lying by Sissela Bok.
