Target Audience:
- This course is designed for those who would be willing to serve on a Serious Accident Investigation Team (SAIT) as core team members:
- Team Leaders (those in agency leadership positions GS-14 or above);
- Chief Investigators (technically trained investigators who meet agency requirements or those who have the potential to serve in this role)
- Safety Managers (Safety and Health professionals and/or NWCG qualified Safety Officers who are interested in working as SAIT Chief Investigators and/or Safety Managers).
- This course is also relevant for subject matter experts (e.g., fire operations, heavy equipment operations, tree felling operations) and for those who function in support roles (e.g., documentation specialist, public information officers, writer/editors) whom may be asked to participate in serious accident investigations.
- An accident investigation is the methodical collection of evidence, and the analysis as well as interpretation of the evidence. The fundamental purpose is to identify the cause(s) of the accident and to recommend corrective actions to prevent or minimize the chance of a recurrence. This Inter-Agency Serious Accident Investigation course provides guidance on how to conduct a serious accident investigation and perform the associated administrative tasks.
Objectives: By the end of this course students will be able to
Explain relevant laws, policies, and procedures of a DOI Serious Accident Investigation process
Manage and investigate serious accidents.
